So what if they met a couple of artists and got free swag gear? And SO WHAT if you’re getting even more bitter about missing SXSW 2013 by reading this right after you proclaimed in 2012 that you WILL attend the annual mega tech-music festival next year? You’ll get over it. SOME-thing is better than nothing, and the something that happens to be WAY better than nothing is the 6th annual South By So What?! Dallas’ South By So What goes a step further to have early access, exclusive meet and greets, ticket bundles/packages, goodie bags and posters. Tickets start at $45.

Texas Legends First Annual Black History Night

6 Feb

dallegendsThis Saturday night, Feb 9th, the Texas Legends partner with the Antonio Johnson Show and 855 Quick Dry to host their first annual “Black History Night”. The Texas Legends are the NBA Developmental League affiliate of the 2011 NBA World Champion Dallas Mavericks franchise and will take on the Cleveland Cavaliers affiliate during “Black History Night with the Legends”. The team has placed many an NBA hopeful and is the breeding ground for many more. Coached by former Maverick and University of Oklahoma standout Eduardo Najera, the Legends are well on their way to actualizing their prestigious moniker. The team’s first coach was legendary basketball coach Nancy Lieberman.

Teaming up with the Legends is radio revolutionist and entrepreneur Antonio Johnson. Johnson has been a force in radio and media since his arrival to the area in the late 90’s. Johnson’s latest venture has spotlighted a genre inside a genre that normally gets little attention (Gospel Rap). His show’s partnership with the Legends is doing the same for the African-American community in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, shining a light on often overlooked achievers in black communities, schools and businesses.

To share in this monumental honor, the Legends will don “one of a kind” jerseys for the game. In addition to the commemorative jerseys, there will be appearances by NBA legend and Dallas Native Spud Webb and Marques Haynes to name a few. To this day, Webb is most commonly known for his dynamic feat of overcoming adversity and winning the 1986 Slam Dunk Competition at the NBA All-Star game. Webb the high flyer will be joined by the most dexterous dribbler, Marques Haynes of the Harlem Globetrotters. black-history-monthHaynes joined the team in 2011 and is an integral part of shaping the careers of these NBA hopefuls. Haynes’ career is not without laurels. Haynes was the first Globetrotter to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall Basketball Hall of Fame and his #20 jersey is one of only five retired by the Globetrotters organization. With dribbling skills that influenced “Pistol Pete” Marovich and Bob Cousy, it can be said that Haynes is the greatest dribbler of all time!

The evening of honor will be spectacular! Selected jerseys will be available for purchase during an in-game silent auction. All proceeds from the auction will be given to charity. Five local Pastors have also been selected to take a half-court shot for the chance to win $10,000.legendplyr

Kudos to the Texas Legends and the Antonio Johnson Show for bringing this exceptional night to D-League basketball. Black History Night utilizes the fast paced game of basketball to pause and salute those locally who have made major league contributions to the area and people around them!

The game begins at 7pm and will air on TXA21 locally For ticket information, please call 214-469-0822 or click here.
