2nd Annual Dallas Reggae Festival

19 Jul

Saturday, July 23rd, marks the 2nd year of the Dallas Reggae Festival! Who said North Texas didn’t have much Carribbean culture? Well, Dallas is no Houston but I bet if you go by Fair Park this Saturday afternoon you may forget that you’re in a state as opposed to an island. The 2nd Annual Reggae Festival will begin at 4:00pm and end at 11:00pm. The doors open at 3:00pm! It will be held at The Bandshell at Fair Park in Dallas.

Richie Spice will hit the stage this year

You can expect live music from Roots Unlimited Band, A-Squad/Anthony Jade, Smurph, Donovan Bulleton, Mark Griffis, Hyron Ferguson, DJ Josh and DJ Cap, Famous Squad Outta Houson, MC Steady Rankin and Sing Kumba. Of course the Reggae music will be accompanied by island cuisine, arts and crafts. You can be sure that two of Dallas’ best island restaurants, Elaine’s Kitchen and Caribbean Grill, will be there selling delicious West Indian food to satisfy you palettes. This event only happens once a year and this is just the 2nd year so make sure not to miss!

Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and drums but please no coolers, food/drinks, pets, drugs of any kind, large umbrellas or tents. Most importantly bring your positive energy for this grand Reggae festival! Come out and represent your country/island, your heritage and celebrate your love for reggae music. JAM to Give | Braxton Family Values

15 Jul

The 8-week concert series of Cedar Hill Uptown Village continues this week as DFW saxophonist Tom Braxton returns to the stage. Last year he filled the Village Green with smooth jazzy sax sounds that had the crowd dancing and tapping their heels, and this year will be no different. Believe it or not, he taught my brother to play the saxophone when we were younger, so I know he’s a talented musician! With his new album, Endless Highway, now available in stores, Braxton instills those family values by giving to a charitable cause through his music. As it may not be the same exact values as Toni Braxton and her sisters, Tom Braxton (no relation to the VH1 reality stars) has managed to make a name for himself across the U.S. and most importantly the DFW Metroplex. By supporting the local non-profit Hope Mansion, Braxton can help you support a worthy cause and cool off at the end of the week with some quality live music.

Dallas Saxophonist Tom Braxon plays July 15

Found just last November, the Hope Mansion is a faith-based community partnership organization aimed at providing a support system for women in crisis with unplanned/unwanted pregnancies. Located right in Cedar Hill, Hope Mansion provides women support facilities for women in the metroplex should they choose to keep their child or place them up for adoption with limited availability in the entire metroplex as Elizabeth Homes and Grace Home were both recently closed. You can be a part of supporting the non-profit’s mission of practical support for mothers’ and their babies during a time of crisis by bringing toiletry items to Friday’s evening concert (July 15). Whether it’s toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, lotion, whatever, help make a difference in someone else’s life by providing just a small simple contribution. We, as a community, can make a difference and JAM to Give helps us do just that on a weekly basis. Join us at the Village Green once again for a live saxophone performance by one of Dallas’ best jazz musicians and support this concert for a cause that benefits the Hope Mansion.

The concert will be from 7-9pm so you have a little time to change and unwind after work. The kids can bring their swimsuits and beat the heat playing at the fountain in the meantime. This is the second to last concert of the Summer hosted by Uptown Village so catch it before July 22nd comes!

Addison Summer Series: July Jazz

13 Jul

The Addison Summer Concert series is back this year with more free music and the perfect ambiance. Nestled in Addison Circle not far from all the congestion and busyness of Belt Line Road, Addison’s Summer Series manages to draw hundreds each year. With three months of themed music played by local groups, North Dallas residents have somewhere to run away on Saturday evenings. This month there will be Jazz music played each weekend. The first Saturday started off with Tres Leches and continues July 16th with Melani L. Skybell. Sun sets about 8:30/8:40ish so the temperature will cool down a LITTLE bit, but the trees and shade of the residential and business buildings provide some relief from the sun. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, picnic baskets, snacks, drinks, etc. I’ve seen people come out with a full blown low-rise picnic table and extended lawn chairs! The local eateries also sell pizza and other treats while the Margarita station covers your adult drinks.

A Past Addison Circle Summer Concert Series during Symphonic Saturdays

If you’re a fan of Jazz and want to hear some for free or are even looking for a romantic cheap date, try out Bekert Park in Addison Circle on Saturday nights. Once the music has stopped, no one’s forcing you to go anywhere! Enjoy the ambiance, stroll around the rest of Addison Circle or drive down Belt Line Road to see what other fun stuff you can find! This event is going on every Saturday in July. Catch some of the areas top jazz musicians at Addison’s July Jazz!

JAM To Give | Beat the Heat with The Best of the Beatles

8 Jul

End a hard day’s work listening to A Hard Night’s Day from 7-9pm and donate to a worthy cause.

Cedar Hill Uptown Village’s Summer series continues this Friday, July 8th with A Hard Night’s Day. Enjoy the musical tribute to the Beatles in the center of Cedar Hill’s liveliest weekend spot. The kids can splash around the water gardens as you travel back to a time when mop top haircuts showed your level of ‘swag’. A Hard Night’s Day is the best known Beatles cover band in the DFW area. As you know, the concert lasts from 7-9pm and it is requested that you donate a particular item each week for a charitable cause.

DFW's #1 Beatles cover Band hits the Village Green 7/8

The Tri City Animal Shelter is the organization that will benefit from this week’s donations. Located right down the street from Uptown Village on Pleasant Run, The Tri City Animal Shelter provides cages and kennels for strays as well as adoptable dogs. The municipal animal shelter serves DeSoto, Cedar Hill and Duncanville so once a stray is found in one of those cities they can be brought here. The mission of the Tri-City Animal Shelter & Adoption Center is to provide exemplary care for the impounded and unwanted animals through redemption, adoption, and public education. It’s only been a couple of years that they’ve been in their new Pleasant Run location and have already made a significant impact on the community, not to mention surrounding cities as well.

So, how can you help?? Bring Dry dog good and newspaper to Friday’s concert. Newspaper is easy since many of us already get that and throw them out anyways. Just make it a point to bring those newspapers for a shelter that can use it! This event doesn’t get much better! Pack up the cooler and lawn chairs and join us on the Village Green this weekend as we give back and JAM to Give! Remember your donation items: dry dog food and newspaper.

From July 8th-10th the best North Texas chefs, restaurants, bands and artists will gather at Fair Park for one of Dallas’ largest summer events. Starting last year Taste of Dallas moved their location to Fair Park after 24 years in West End. The new location provides expansion of all the activities that take place at the annual festival adding 150,000 square feet of indoor space so you have a chance to escape the heat when you want. JAM to Give | A Triple B Benefit Concert

1 Jul

Saxophonist Tom Braxton performing at last year's JAM to Give in July

Today marks the first JAM to Give of the month of July! Start out the Holiday weekend with your family by supporting a good cause. Cedar Hill Uptown Village‘s JAM to Give concert series has returned this summer with a lineup of great bands and local artists. This Friday is no different with the soul/funk group Buster Brown Band. Tonight’s concert will benefit Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center. You can contribute by bringing children’s toys. It’s okay if they are gently used but try not to bring anything too worn out and dirty.

The mission of the Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center is “to improve the quality of life for children and adults with physical, mental, emotional, behavior, social and spiritual needs by providing activities through the interaction with the equine family and the agricultural environment. The organization will educate others to work with horses in the treatment of individuals with these challenges.” Visit the Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center website to learn more about this great organization.

Buster Brown Band

The event goes from 7:00 to 9:00pm at the Village Green. With this heat your little ones may even enjoy running around the water garden. JAM to Give is here EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT (unless bad weather hits) to benefit a good cause and present you with the opportunity to sit back and relax some great music while the kids enjoy the outdoors. You can hear the music playing throughout the mall as you shop at any of Uptown Village’s local stores. Lawn chairs, blankets and coolers are welcome, but please leave the boo’s at home. You can’t miss the stage on the Village Green once you enter Uptown Village in Cedar Hill! This is a great way to unwind at the end of a week. It’s also something to keep the kids busy. It takes place close to sunset so you won’t have to worry about scorching temperatures the entire time. Don’t forget your toys (maybe some sunblock too) and we’ll see you then!!

Cedar Hill Uptown Village is located between 1382 & Pleasant Run Road by Hwy 67
