Uptown Village’s Back-To-School Kid’s Fest & Concert

17 Aug

It’s that time of year again! Time to find new backpacks, lunchbags, wide ruled paper and take advantage of the annual Tax Free weekend! In Cedar Hill, it’s time to celebrate Uptown Village’s first ever Back-To-School Kid’s Fest & Concert August 20th! It’s still pretty hot outside in Texas so this Back-To-School Fest will only last about 4 hours. Throughout the entire Saturday event Two-Wins Foundation will be accepting $25 donations to help provide local underprivileged children with school supplies.

Expect exciting Drumline performances

During the first two hours (4-6pm) of Back-to-School KID’S FEST Stacia’s School of Dance, the Duncanville Cheerleaders and DeSoto High School’s Drill Team will give dance performances. Attendees will also get the opportunity to meet the 2011 Cedar Hill High School football team.

Meet this year's CHHS Fball team

Face painting, balloon art, bounce houses, crafts and other fun activities will keep attendees engaged.

The Back-to-School Concert will take place from 6:00 – 8:00pm. The concert will feature local party and dance band Top with drumline performances during intermission. Between JAM to Give, Wine Walks, Family Movie Nights and great shopping, Uptown Village is quickly becoming the place to go! Now as the summer comes to an end, the Village Green events don’t stop. Support Two-Wins Foundation August 20th as we come together to make the schoolyear a little better for those who have less than what’s needed.

Donations will go towards school supplies for local underprivileged students

So as some of us gear up for school again let the rhythms of Soul II Soul get you back in the mode of homework, sack lunches & good ole’ PTA meetings!

Hawaiian Falls Splash Out Hunger Food Drive

2 Aug

August 1st kicks off the “Help Hawaiian Falls Splash Out Hunger” Food Drive that will benefit the North Texas Food Bank and the Tarrant Area Food Bank. This food drive will be running from August 1st thru Labor Day Weekend, September 5th. North Texans are encouraged to bring a can of food or nonperishable food item and you’ll receive $5 off a Big Kahuna ticket! A regular Big Kahuna ticket it basically just a ticket for people above 48 inches in height costing $23.99. Lil Kahuna’s (under 48 inches) are only $16.99 for admission and Keiki’s (kids years old and under) are free! The discount on your ticket will be applied at the ticket window.

It’s one thing for low-income families, unemployed workers, senior citizens, victims of domestic abuse or family violence and people with chronic illnesses or disabilities to get by during the school year or regular months, but it can be even worse during the summer time when school-aged kids to not have access to free or reduced-cost school lunch programs. Imagine how you can affect a person’s life right here in our own area by donating food items to a great cause. It’s not just about your Hawaiian Falls discounted pass, but that’s just an added bonus.

While we all may be familiar with North Texas Food Bank, but if you weren’t aware TAFB (Tarrant Area Food Bank) covers Tarrant county as well as 12 neighboring counties on the west side of DFW. TAFB distributes donated foods from their Ft. Worth warehouse to 300 partner agencies that serve Texans in need. A $1 donation helps TAFB provide enough for 3 donated meals so imagine what you’re doing for a small $5.00!

Remember, Hawaiian Falls Splash Out Hunger is going on now through September 5th!! The $5.00 discount on Big Kahuna ticket will only be available during this time period also but there are always deals going on. Hawaiian Falls has water parks in Garland, The Colony, Mansfield and Roanoke. For more information on Splash Out Hunger and other Hawaiian Falls events or discounts click here.

KRLD Restaurant Week 2011 Now Taking Reservations

24 Jul

In less than a month KRLD Restaurant Week returns to DFW!! The annual event gives you the opportunity to enjoy a three-course prix fixe dinner for only $35/person at some of the top most expensive restaurants around town. The package does not include tax, tip and drinks but just dinner. KRLD Restaurant Week will run from August 15 – August 21. You can select from about 125 restaurants. Over half of the restaurants will extend the deal for about two or three weeks, like through August 28th and some til September 4th. Some restaurants are even offering a Restaurant Week preview the weekend right before it officially starts, which will take place Fri. Aug. 12th through Sun. Aug. 14th.

Once you recognize some of the restaurants offering the deal you’ll understand that you can’t beat $35, especially if it’s a three-course meal!! Also the restaurants aren’t all in one particular city or area but stretch from Downtown and Uptown to Addison out to Ft. Worth!

KRLD Restaurant Week also benefits two of the metroplex’s major non-profits, the North Texas Food Bank of Dallas and Lena Pope Home of Fort Worth. For each prix fixe dinner purchased, the participating restaurants will make a $7 donation to either of the charities. From what I understand, some reservations can be made online while others you may have to call in. It’s not too early to make your reservations either! In fact, reservations began on Monday, July 18th! This may not be the Taste of Dallas but it can be your formal air conditioned version of it. For all you steak lovers and hardcore carnivores there are some pretty high ranked meaty restaurants participating in Restaurant Week 2011. Don’t miss out on this annual event coming up next month! Make your reservations soon and tell ‘em DFW Happenings sent ya!

JAM To Give | Beat the Heat with The Best of the Beatles

8 Jul

End a hard day’s work listening to A Hard Night’s Day from 7-9pm and donate to a worthy cause.

Cedar Hill Uptown Village’s Summer series continues this Friday, July 8th with A Hard Night’s Day. Enjoy the musical tribute to the Beatles in the center of Cedar Hill’s liveliest weekend spot. The kids can splash around the water gardens as you travel back to a time when mop top haircuts showed your level of ‘swag’. A Hard Night’s Day is the best known Beatles cover band in the DFW area. As you know, the concert lasts from 7-9pm and it is requested that you donate a particular item each week for a charitable cause.

DFW's #1 Beatles cover Band hits the Village Green 7/8

The Tri City Animal Shelter is the organization that will benefit from this week’s donations. Located right down the street from Uptown Village on Pleasant Run, The Tri City Animal Shelter provides cages and kennels for strays as well as adoptable dogs. The municipal animal shelter serves DeSoto, Cedar Hill and Duncanville so once a stray is found in one of those cities they can be brought here. The mission of the Tri-City Animal Shelter & Adoption Center is to provide exemplary care for the impounded and unwanted animals through redemption, adoption, and public education. It’s only been a couple of years that they’ve been in their new Pleasant Run location and have already made a significant impact on the community, not to mention surrounding cities as well.

So, how can you help?? Bring Dry dog good and newspaper to Friday’s concert. Newspaper is easy since many of us already get that and throw them out anyways. Just make it a point to bring those newspapers for a shelter that can use it! This event doesn’t get much better! Pack up the cooler and lawn chairs and join us on the Village Green this weekend as we give back and JAM to Give! Remember your donation items: dry dog food and newspaper.

Tri-City serves DeSoto, Duncanville & Cedar Hill

JAM to Give | A Triple B Benefit Concert

1 Jul

Saxophonist Tom Braxton performing at last year's JAM to Give in July

Today marks the first JAM to Give of the month of July! Start out the Holiday weekend with your family by supporting a good cause. Cedar Hill Uptown Village‘s JAM to Give concert series has returned this summer with a lineup of great bands and local artists. This Friday is no different with the soul/funk group Buster Brown Band. Tonight’s concert will benefit Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center. You can contribute by bringing children’s toys. It’s okay if they are gently used but try not to bring anything too worn out and dirty.

The mission of the Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center is “to improve the quality of life for children and adults with physical, mental, emotional, behavior, social and spiritual needs by providing activities through the interaction with the equine family and the agricultural environment. The organization will educate others to work with horses in the treatment of individuals with these challenges.” Visit the Campfire Creek Therapeutic Riding Center website to learn more about this great organization.

The event goes from 7:00 to 9:00pm at the Village Green. With this heat your little ones may even enjoy running around the water garden. JAM to Give is here EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT (unless bad weather hits) to benefit a good cause and present you with the opportunity to sit back and relax some great music while the kids enjoy the outdoors. You can hear the music playing throughout the mall as you shop at any of Uptown Village’s local stores. Lawn chairs, blankets and coolers are welcome, but please leave the boo’s at home. You can’t miss the stage on the Village Green once you enter Uptown Village in Cedar Hill! This is a great way to unwind at the end of a week. It’s also something to keep the kids busy. It takes place close to sunset so you won’t have to worry about scorching temperatures the entire time. Don’t forget your toys (maybe some sunblock too) and we’ll see you then!!

Cedar Hill Uptown Village is located between 1382 & Pleasant Run Road by Hwy 67
